The small community of Nogales offers a relatively high number of educational opportunities for its residents.

Santa Cruz County Provisional Community College District

More than 900 students are attending classes at the local community college, which provides classes at its center in the Santa Cruz County Provisional Community College District building in Nogales, located on Grand Avenue. Since offering classes in Santa Cruz County through Cochise Community College in October 2003 the provisional college has offered students a solid start in their bachelor’s degree while living close at home. More than 100 classes offered every semester help students prepare to transfer to a university, earn an associates degree or lead a career to certification.

Class size at the Santa Cruz Center averages 15 students, and all classes are fully transferable. Transfer degrees are offered in the arts, business and sciences, along with four levels of English as a Second Language. Students taking classes at the Santa Cruz Center learn with modern, up-to-date technology in a modern setting. There are three computer labs, as well as an interactive television classroom, which allows students to take classes along with peers and instructors at campus and center locations in Cochise County.

Sixty-eight percent of students work while attending Cochise College, which is why online classes are also available to fit your schedule. Classes are offered during the day, nights and weekends. The staff at the Santa Cruz Center offers placement testing, GED testing and CLEP testing, advising, admissions, registration and financial aid. A wide array of scholarships are also available. The college bookstore visits the center at the beginning of each semester.

UA Santa Cruz

While Santa Cruz County is rural, it is located near Tucson, the state’s second largest metropolitan area as well as emerging, economically critical communities in Douglas, Sierra Vista, Nogales and Yuma. The region is prominent globally given the cultural, political and economic diversity that comes with an international border between Arizona and Mexico nearly 400 miles in length.

UA South provides Santa Cruz County residents with affordable, accessible opportunities to earn high-quality and meaningful University of Arizona degrees in sites throughout Southern Arizona, including key border communities in Cochise and Santa Cruz Counties. Partnering with community colleges, UA South offers bachelor degrees that are of high quality, low cost, and geographically accessible. In addition to traditional degree programs in education, computer science, humanities and the social sciences, UA South offers Bachelor of Applied Science programs, Master’s programs in education, and a variety of continuing education programs designed to meet the workforce needs of regional industry.

Nogales Unified School District

NUSD #1 is located about an hour south of Tucson in the beautiful mountains of Southern Arizona. The school district serves approximately 6,200 students in 10 schools which include a preschool program, six elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. Located in the southern part of Santa Cruz County, students and families bring to our school community a rich cultural background that reflects life on both sides of the border.

Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District

Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District is a high performing school district serving six rural communities. It boasts small class sizes, excellent faculty and staff members, and a commitment to providing the best in education for students from preschool through 12th grade. The district boundaries span 265 square miles, covering rural communities along I-19 from Amado to Rio Rico, Arizona. This district is a high performing district, rated “A” by the Arizona Department of Education in 2012.
